Ibuprofen dose for a child by weight

The calculator works out a child’s ibuprofen dose by weight — as in the leaflet (5–10 mg/kg per dose). Enter weight and syrup concentration to get the single dose in mg and mL, the daily maximum and the interval. It’s a reference guide per the official leaflet, not a prescription: a doctor confirms it.

How the dose is calculated

Ibuprofen for children is dosed by weight: 5–10 mg per kilogram per dose. For a 20 kg child that’s about 100–200 mg. Per day — no more than 40 mg/kg and no more than 3–4 doses, interval 6–8 hours.

Dosing by weight is more accurate than by age: children of the same age vary a lot in weight.

How to measure the syrup and key points

Enter the concentration from the bottle (mg per 5 mL, e.g. 100 mg/5 mL) — the calculator converts the dose into millilitres. Measure with the syringe or cap from the pack.

Give ibuprofen after food and with enough fluids: on an empty stomach and when dehydrated it’s tolerated worse and can affect the stomach and kidneys.

When not to use it and when to see a doctor

Don’t give ibuprofen to children under 3 months or under 5 kg, or with dehydration, chickenpox, ulcers or kidney problems — without a doctor. Don’t exceed the dose or shorten the interval.

See a doctor urgently: fever over 3 days, very high temperature, lethargy, rash, seizures, refusal to drink. Antipyretics relieve the symptom; a doctor assesses the cause.

Frequently asked questions

  • By weight: 5–10 mg per kilogram per dose, up to 40 mg/kg a day, interval 6–8 hours. The calculator gives the single dose in mg and mL of syrup from weight and concentration.

  • It depends on the bottle’s concentration (mg per 5 mL). Enter it and the calculator converts the dose into millilitres. Measure only with a syringe or cap.

  • No more often than every 6–8 hours and no more than 3–4 times a day. Exceeding the dose or shortening the interval is not allowed.

  • Usually from 3 months and 5 kg; earlier only on a doctor’s advice. For fever in a child under 3 months, see a doctor right away.

  • Both lower fever; the choice and any alternating are decided by a doctor considering age, condition and contraindications. Give ibuprofen after food and with enough fluids.
