HOMA-IR calculator (insulin resistance index)

Enter fasting glucose and fasting insulin — the calculator computes the HOMA-IR index and shows whether it’s within the norm or points to insulin resistance. HOMA-IR is a simple way to gauge how well cells respond to insulin, long before diabetes appears.

What the HOMA-IR index means

Approximate adult thresholds; the exact cut-off depends on the lab and the insulin assay.

What HOMA-IR is

HOMA-IR (Homeostasis Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance) is a calculated index that estimates insulin resistance from two fasting tests: glucose and insulin. It shows whether the pancreas has to make more insulin to keep sugar normal.

Insulin resistance is an early stage on the way to type 2 diabetes and part of metabolic syndrome. Catching it early matters — at this stage much is reversible with lifestyle.

How HOMA-IR is calculated

Formula: HOMA-IR = fasting glucose (mmol/L) × fasting insulin (µU/mL) / 22.5. Both values must be drawn fasting or the result is distorted. A normal guide is below 2.7; 2.7–3.8 is borderline; above 3.8 is usually read as insulin resistance.

Thresholds are approximate and depend on the lab and insulin assay, so always cross-check with the reference range on your report.

What to do with a high index

A raised HOMA-IR isn’t a diagnosis — it’s a signal. It’s most often driven by excess weight (especially around the belly), inactivity and a diet high in fast carbs. Losing weight, regular activity and eating patterns can markedly improve insulin sensitivity. A doctor — an endocrinologist or GP — sets the plan.

Frequently asked questions

  • Using the formula: fasting glucose (mmol/L) × fasting insulin (µU/mL) / 22.5. The calculator does it instantly — enter both values from a fasting blood test.

  • A guide is below 2.7. The 2.7–3.8 range is borderline, above 3.8 suggests insulin resistance. The exact cut-off depends on the lab and insulin assay.

  • Yes, both glucose and insulin must be drawn strictly fasting (8–12 hours without food). Otherwise the index is inflated and loses meaning.

  • No. It’s insulin resistance — an early stage that lifestyle can often reverse. A doctor makes the diagnosis and sets the plan based on the full set of tests.
