How to Open an MRI or CT Disc on a Computer: Step by Step

You were given a disc after an MRI or CT scan, you inserted it — and saw no familiar pictures. Just folders, files without extensions and a strange DICOMDIR that opens with nothing. That is normal: the disc is not built like a memory stick with photos.
Why the images don't open by double-clicking
Scanners store studies in the DICOM format — an international standard that keeps the acquisition data alongside the image: what it was taken with, at what slice thickness, in which projection, whether contrast was given.
An ordinary picture stores brightness from 0 to 255. DICOM stores far more gradations — usually 12 or 16 bits instead of 8. That is why a radiologist can adjust brightness and contrast and see lungs, then liver, then bone on the very same slice. A JPEG has already lost that: only the one view someone chose at export remains.
What is on the disc

Missing .dcm in a filename is not a fault: the standard does not require an extension, and the format is recognised by content, not by name.
How to view them on a computer
Start with the viewer on the disc itself — it is matched to the study and needs nothing installed on your computer. If there is none, use a free one: MicroDicom or RadiAnt on Windows, Horos on macOS, Weasis on any system. Choose "Open folder" and point it at the DICOM folder, so the slices assemble into a scrollable series.
Web viewers exist too — but remember that DICOM headers carry your name and date of birth, so check what such a service promises to do with what you upload.
If the disc will not read
Optical drives have disappeared from laptops, and discs scratch and stop reading over time. Ask the clinic to send the study by link or on a USB stick — many do that now, and it is more reliable than a disc. Many clinics also keep a cloud archive you can reach with a code from your contract. If the disc reads only partly, copy across whatever copies: some slices beat none.
If you need to understand, not just view
These are two different tasks. To view an image you need the programs above. To understand what is on it, you don't need to open the disc at all: in imaging decoding the disc files are uploaded as they are and read directly. The original is more informative than a photo of a screen — the full brightness scale is preserved, and projection, contrast use and slice thickness are read from the header.
