Why it is a hexagon rather than a list

The main idea of the model is not the six types themselves but their arrangement. The types are placed around a circle so that adjacent ones are similar in what they demand and opposite ones demand opposites:

  • realistic ↔ social;
  • investigative ↔ enterprising;
  • artistic ↔ conventional.

Two practical consequences follow.

The shape matters more than the peak. A profile stretched in one direction reads easily. A profile with two high opposite types is about a conflict of demands, and work satisfying both is rare. That is not a verdict: the usual solution is for one pole to live inside the job and the other alongside it.

Adjacent types substitute more easily. A move between neighbouring directions on the circle is cheaper than between opposite ones. For planning a transition this is the most useful property of the model.

What a three-letter RIASEC code means

A code is the three leading types in descending order. The order matters: the first letter weighs more than the rest.

Occupations in directories are described with a three-letter code too, by the content of the work. The overlap between a person's profile and an occupation's code is called congruence, and direction matching is built on it.

⚠️ A subtlety often lost: if your three leading types come out almost level, your «code» is unstable — a repeat might swap the letters. It is then more honest to speak of a group of nearby directions than of a code.

A flat profile is normal

Sometimes no type rises above the rest. That is neither a test error nor «no interests». For some people the profile is flat, and then the only honest conclusion is: there is no peak, and a direction cannot be assigned on a three-point difference.

In that case the weight moves elsewhere: to work values (what work is for), to constraints (what is actually possible) and to lived experience (what has already been done with pleasure).

The limits of the Holland model

The model answers the question «what pulls you». It does not answer three others, and that is worth holding in mind.

It is not about ability. Pull and skill are different things. Abilities cannot be measured by a questionnaire at home; they can only be invented.

It is not about conditions. Interests say nothing about whether you can afford the entry: how many months without your previous income, whether you have energy to study, whether the schedule can change.

It does not decide for you. Across more than a hundred studies, the link between interest fit and job satisfaction is moderate — about one part in twenty-five of the differences between people. With performance it is noticeably stronger. A manager, a workload, money and health weigh more than a job title.

How to use it practically

  1. Look at the shape of the profile, not at a single peak.
  2. Check for an opposite pair of high types — and if there is one, decide which pole lives inside the job.
  3. Take directions adjacent to your leading types as cheaper transition options.
  4. Overlay work values and your constraints — without them a list of directions stays theoretical.
  5. Test two or three directions in real life: a conversation with an insider about an ordinary Tuesday.

What an algorithm computes here

In the career direction test the hexagon and the three-letter code are computed by code: both axes and the gates of four branches are shown free right away, the figure with its code comes with the full reading. The same code then matches candidates from a 192-occupation directory — adjusted for your constraints and capped at three per sector. If the profile comes out flat, the reading says so plainly and leans on values and constraints instead of inventing a peak.

When it is not about the instrument but about your state

A separate check worth doing before any test: if nothing brings joy — including what used to — and rest does not restore, put the question of choice aside. In that state nothing looks interesting, and any typology will return an equally empty answer. That is a property of the state, not of the instrument: start with the burnout reading and a doctor.
