Finding Yourself: Why «Find Your Passion» Backfires
Reviewed by the LabReadAI medical team
«Find yourself», «find your passion», «find your life's work» — these phrases sound so supportive that few people examine what they are actually proposing. They propose a search for something that already exists and is hidden. Like keys.
The trouble is that this picture is not merely inaccurate. It measurably gets in the way.
What the research on «passion» shows
Work on implicit theories of interest compared two stances: interest is fixed and must be found, and interest develops. People holding the first stance:
- engaged worse with anything outside their stated area of interest — they narrowed their own field;
- expected limitless motivation from «their» work: if it is a calling, it should come easily;
- quit at the first difficulty — because in that logic difficulty means not «I am not good at this yet» but «then this is not it».
People holding the second stance held on. And that is the only practical conclusion needed: interest grows as a person becomes skilled. Not the other way round.
Why «I do not know what I want» is about experience, not self-knowledge
When someone says they do not understand what they want, they usually mean they cannot choose among what they know. But you can only think about what you have tried in some form. There is no internal catalogue of desires separate from experience.
Hence a practice that works better than introspection: collect experience in small pieces and look at the trace it leaves. Not «do I like this in theory» but: after which activity did I fail to notice two hours passing? After which was I wrung out despite doing nothing objectively hard? What do I do for free and voluntarily when nobody asks?
Three questions that give more than any «purpose» test:
- What did I do over the past year and then tell other people about of my own accord?
- What did I postpone every time, though it was not difficult?
- What was I thanked for, though it cost me no effort?
The answers are worth writing down — actually writing, not thinking. A written exercise turned out, in career-intervention research, to be one of the components that genuinely affects the outcome.
Feeling lost as an adult almost always has an address
«I have lost myself» in an adult is rarely about a whole life. Usually one of four things sits behind it, and separating them is useful.
| What is behind it | How to tell |
|---|---|
| The wrong job | Outside work the interest is there: weekends, conversations, hobbies |
| One sagging part of the job | The job is broadly fine, but the tasks, the people or the meaning died |
| Being spent | Nothing brings joy, including what used to; rest does not restore |
| Shifted values | The same work stopped mattering — usually after a major event |
The first is answered by a change, the second by reshaping the current job (rebuilding tasks, relationships and meaning inside the same role raises satisfaction in research with no resignation), the third not by a career conversation but by a doctor and recovery, and the fourth by reassembling values rather than by finding a new title.
⚠️ The third row is worth checking first. If there is nothing left in the tank, nothing looks interesting — and every list of directions will look equally empty, because there is nothing left to choose with. That is a property of the state. Start then with the burnout reading and a doctor; weakness, poor sleep and a drop in working capacity also come from perfectly checkable bodily causes — ferritin, TSH, vitamin D, a full blood count.
What to do instead of searching
The «develop, not find» frame translates into four concrete actions.
Narrow to something checkable. Not «find myself» but «work out what suits me among things that actually exist». The difference is enormous: the second has an end.
Try fast and small. One small real task is more informative than a month of reflection and than any course. A course shows whether you like studying.
Ask people on the inside. Not «do you like your job» but «what does an ordinary Tuesday look like for you». The gap between «sounds good» and reality is learned in one conversation.
Allow yourself a stretch of being bad at it. The first period in any field is a period of poor results. In the logic of a calling that reads as a verdict; in the logic of development, as normal.
About the words «calling» and «purpose»
They need not be banned like swear words. They are convenient names for a road already travelled: a person who has practised medicine for twenty years may well call it a calling, and they will be right. The error is to use them as a criterion at the entrance. At the entrance no calling is visible, and it is not supposed to be.
What an algorithm computes here, rather than an eye
Taking the feeling «I do not know what I want» apart by hand is hard: inside it sit interests, values, constraints and state all at once, and they are felt as a single lump.
The career direction test separates them by code: six interest types and six work values are scored separately, the type of decision difficulty separately, and the state separately — and the state overrides everything else. Plus two axes: how well you understand what you want, and how realistic a move is at your circumstances. The word «calling» does not appear in the reading once, for the reasons above.
