Limping looks simple: the dog spares a leg. Underneath sit three very different worlds — ligaments and joints, bone, and nerves. They are separated by age, breed, how fast the problem appeared and which leg is affected. Here is what stands behind each version and the point at which limping stops being orthopaedics and becomes urgent neurology.
Why a Dog Is Limping: How a Vet Narrows It Down
The first thing a vet does is ask four questions, and an owner can answer them before the visit.
- When it started. Suddenly on a walk — trauma, a ligament, a strain. Gradually over weeks — a joint, arthritis, dysplasia, bone tumour.
- Which leg. Front legs point to the shoulder, elbow, wrist and neck. Back legs to the knee, hip and lower spine.
- Age. A growing dog — dysplasia and growth plate disease. An adult — ligaments. An old dog — arthritis and tumours.
- Size and breed. Large breeds bring dysplasia and ligaments forward, small breeds a slipping kneecap, dachshunds the intervertebral disc.
Breed shifts the odds far more in dogs than in cats: the same limp in a labrador and in a toy terrier is investigated from opposite ends.
Cranial Cruciate Ligament Rupture — the Most Common Cause
This is the leading orthopaedic diagnosis in dogs. One detail surprises owners: a dog's ligament usually does not tear from injury the way an athlete's does. It degenerates over months, loses strength and gives way during an ordinary movement — a sharp turn, a jump off the sofa, a run after a ball.
What it looks like:
- sudden limping on a back leg, often after a completely routine movement;
- the dog toe-touches or carries the leg, then starts using it again after a few days, and the owner decides it has passed;
- the joint swells, and over time the thigh on that side loses muscle;
- the ligament in the other leg often ruptures within a year or two, because the same degenerative process is at work.
The diagnosis is made by hand: the vet tests how far the shin shifts against the thigh. The ligament itself is invisible on radiographs, which show only indirect signs — joint effusion and later bony spurs. What can be seen on the film is covered in dog leg and joint x-ray.
Hip and Elbow Dysplasia in Growing Dogs
Dysplasia is faulty development of a joint, where the surfaces do not match and rub in ways they were not built for. It hits growing large and giant breeds first: labrador, german shepherd, retriever, great dane.
Hip dysplasia gives a recognisable picture: the dog struggles to rise after sleep, runs with a bunny-hop using both back legs at once, avoids stairs and sways at the hips. Elbow dysplasia shows as front-leg limping from four to eight months, often on both sides, with elbows turned outward.
The key point: dysplasia can only be graded on a correct, sedated positioning, otherwise the image lies in both directions. Screening is done after the growth plates close, and the exact age depends on breed and grading scheme. Arthritis in Older Dogs: Limping That Comes and Goes
Arthritis is the end point of almost any old joint damage: past dysplasia, a ruptured ligament, an old injury. Cartilage thins, spurs grow at the edges, the joint loses range.
The portrait of an old dog with arthritis: hard to get up after sleeping, loosens up in five to ten minutes, worse the day after a long walk, worse in winter than in summer, stopped jumping into the car. The limp is wave-like, and its absence on a given day does not mean recovery.

When Limping Is Really the Spine and the Nerves
Intervertebral disc disease is the second big group, and it is regularly mistaken for a pulled leg. The disc bulges or bursts into the spinal canal and compresses the cord. Dachshunds, french bulldogs, pekingese and beagles are especially predisposed.

⚠ Dragging back legs, an inability to stand, knuckled toes and loss of bladder control are emergencies. The sooner the work-up happens, the better the chance of recovery. Injury, Claws and Pads: What to Check on the Leg at Home
Before thinking about joints, examine the foot itself — it is free and solves part of the cases.
- Pads: cuts, burns from hot asphalt, cracks, winter de-icing salt.
- Between the toes: a thorn, a grass awn, a ball of ice, inflammation.
- Claws: a broken or ingrown claw, a damaged dewclaw.
- Swelling and heat: a hot swollen foot suggests infection or a bite.
- Response to touch: where exactly the dog turns towards your hand.
If an obvious injury is found but limping lasts more than two or three days, an examination is still needed: an undisplaced fracture is sometimes invisible on the first image. In cats the causes differ and limping is noticed later — see cat limping.
When a Limping Dog Needs to Go In Immediately
Do not watch, drive in, if:
- the leg hangs, is twisted, or there is an open wound with exposed bone;
- the dog cannot stand or will not bear any weight at all;
- the back legs have given out, the gait is wobbly, the toes drag;
- there is marked spinal or neck pain: the dog cries on movement, trembles, will not be lifted;
- limping with a high temperature, several swollen joints and lethargy;
- limping after a bite, a road accident or a fall from height;
- limping in a giant-breed puppy that worsens over days;
- a firm swelling is felt on the bone — in large old dogs this can be a bone tumour.
What Not to Do at Home
- Do not give human painkillers. Many are toxic to dogs even in small amounts, and a pain-free dog loads the damaged leg and makes things worse. Any medication is a vet's decision.
- Do not massage, manipulate or pull the painful leg.
- Do not apply heat to a joint in the first day after an injury.
- Do not force a dog with a suspected disc to walk it off: movement under cord compression causes harm.
- Do not end rest early — it is the commonest reason limping returns.
- Do not substitute joint supplements for a diagnosis: they do not replace finding the cause.
Until the examination, limit activity: short lead walks instead of free running, no stairs, jumps or play with other dogs.
